Salwa Arnous was born in Jaffa, Palestine; in 1948 her family fled to Beirut and later settled in Cairo. Based in the United States, she makes art about home: the land, the city of Jerusalem, the families who carry both with them, and what it means to lose them. Her work moves between oil and acrylic painting, relief and intaglio printmaking, Arabic calligraphy, collage, cast relief and shadow-box assemblage. In 2003 she travelled to Palestine and gathered women's stories that became the play Otherwise Occupied, created with Dianne Monroe and staged by Jump-Start Performance Company in San Antonio in 2005 and 2007. Her painting is the cover of Aziz Shihab's book Does the Land Remember Me? (Syracuse University Press, 2007).
