Salwa Arnous: Home
The gallery opens with Salwa Arnous. Across paintings, prints, calligraphy and assemblage, her work keeps returning to one subject: home, held onto, remembered and lost. Jerusalem appears through an open window, in a cut relief print and as a skyline at night. Homes appear as rubble, walked past by an old man with a cane or watched over by a dove. Grief is given faces: a father covering his eyes, a mother pressing her hands to hers. Alongside them sit the olive tree, the stone archway, the embroidered thobe and the keffiyeh, the ordinary things that carry a place forward.
